Roofline-Down Tuckpointing, Wood Insert Installation & Roofline-Up Chimney Rebuild

For this Portland home, we completed a combination chimney restoration project that included roofline-down tuckpointing, a roofline-up chimney rebuild, and the installation of a new wood insert. At the homeowner’s request, the chimney was not acid washed in order to preserve its original, aged appearance.

About this Project

This project addressed both structural integrity and functionality while maintaining the character of the home. The chimney showed signs of deterioration at multiple levels, requiring targeted repairs above and below the roofline. The homeowner wanted the chimney restored and strengthened without altering its weathered, original look.

Roofline-Down Tuckpointing

We ground out failing mortar joints from the roofline down and applied new mortar to restore strength and stability to the existing masonry. Tuckpointing reinforces the chimney structure, improves weather resistance, and helps prevent water intrusion through deteriorated mortar joints.

Roofline-Up Chimney Rebuild

The portion of the chimney above the roofline had sustained more advanced damage due to prolonged exposure to the elements. We performed a roofline-up rebuild using new brick and mortar to ensure the chimney was structurally sound, safe, and built to withstand Portland’s climate.

Wood Insert Installation & Finish Preferences

To improve efficiency and usability, we installed a new wood insert as part of the project. The homeowner chose not to acid wash the chimney, preferring a more natural, aged finish that blended with the home’s original character while still benefiting from restored structural integrity.
