Chimney Rebuild From the Roofline Up – Complete Masonry Restoration & Weather Protection

CHIMNEY REBUILD FROM THE ROOFLINE UP | FLASHING, CROWN & SEALING

  • Location: Portland, Oregon
  • Project Type: Chimney demolition and rebuilding from the roofline up, new brick masonry, chimney flashing, crown installation, chimney sealing, and chimney cap installation

About this Project

At Integrity Chimney, we know that a chimney is only as dependable as the masonry and protective components that support it.

For this project, our team completed a chimney rebuild from the roofline up, replacing aging, deteriorated masonry with a newly constructed brick chimney designed for lasting performance.

The before-and-after photos show the transformation from worn brickwork and deteriorating mortar joints to clean, professionally laid masonry, updated flashing, a new chimney crown, and a protective chimney cap.

This restoration focused on more than appearance. Every phase was designed to help protect the chimney against moisture, weather exposure, and the challenges of the Pacific Northwest climate.

🧱 Chimney Demolition & Rebuild From the Roofline Up

When chimney masonry becomes severely deteriorated, minor repairs or tuckpointing may no longer be the most appropriate solution.

In this project, our team removed the existing chimney masonry down to the roofline and rebuilt the chimney using new brick and mortar.

Benefits of rebuilding a deteriorated chimney include:

  • Replacing damaged and weakened masonry
  • Restoring the chimney's exterior structure
  • Establishing fresh, properly constructed mortar joints
  • Improving the chimney's overall appearance
  • Helping extend the chimney's service life

The finished chimney features clean brickwork, consistent mortar joints, and a traditional design that complements the home's roofline.

🏠 New Chimney Flashing Installation

The area where a chimney meets the roof is one of the most vulnerable locations for water intrusion.

Damaged, improperly installed, or aging flashing can allow rainwater to penetrate the roof system and contribute to hidden moisture damage.

As part of this chimney rebuild, our team installed new flashing around the base of the chimney.

Proper chimney flashing helps:

  • Direct rainwater away from the chimney-to-roof connection
  • Reduce the risk of water intrusion
  • Protect vulnerable roofing materials
  • Help prevent moisture-related deterioration

The new black flashing provides a clean, finished appearance while serving as an important part of the chimney's weather protection.

🧱 Chimney Crown Installation

The chimney crown plays an essential role in protecting masonry from water damage.

Located at the top of the brick chimney, the crown helps shed rainwater away from the masonry below.

For this project, our team completed a new chimney crown around the flue opening.

A properly constructed chimney crown helps:

  • Direct moisture away from the chimney's upper masonry

  • Reduce water penetration into mortar joints

  • Protect the top courses of brickwork

  • Limit moisture-related deterioration

In Oregon's rainy climate, maintaining a properly constructed chimney crown is an important part of long-term chimney protection.

💧 Chimney Masonry Sealing & Water Protection

Even newly constructed brick chimneys are exposed to rain, wind, and seasonal temperature changes.

As part of this restoration, our team completed chimney sealing to provide additional protection against moisture absorption.

A suitable masonry water-repellent treatment helps reduce the amount of rainwater absorbed by the brick and mortar while allowing the masonry to release water vapor.

Benefits of chimney sealing include:

  • Helping reduce rainwater absorption

  • Protecting mortar joints against moisture exposure

  • Reducing the potential for water-related masonry deterioration

  • Supporting the long-term condition of the rebuilt chimney

This additional protection is especially valuable for homes throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The Finished Project: A Complete Chimney Transformation

The before-and-after photos highlight the difference a professional chimney rebuild can make.

What began as an aging brick chimney with deteriorating masonry was transformed into a newly constructed chimney featuring fresh brickwork, new flashing, a protective crown, masonry sealing, and a finished chimney cap.

Rather than relying on surface-level repairs, this project addressed the deteriorated masonry through a roofline-up rebuild.

The result is a clean, traditional-looking chimney with improved exterior protection against the elements.
