Don’t Forget the Rest of Your Masonry: What Homeowners Should Inspect

Your chimney isn’t the only masonry around your home that takes a beating from Oregon weather.

Brick walls, stonework, steps, walkways, retaining walls, and other masonry features are constantly exposed to moisture and changing temperatures. Just like your chimney, they need occasional attention.

What Should You Look For?

Take a walk around your property a few times a year and look closely at your masonry.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Cracked or missing mortar
  • Loose bricks or stones
  • Spalling or flaking surfaces
  • Large cracks running through multiple bricks
  • Sections that appear to be leaning or shifting
  • White staining on masonry
  • Moss or heavy organic growth
  • Water collecting against masonry
  • Previous repairs that are cracking again

Small changes are much easier to miss when you see your home every day, so comparing areas from season to season can be helpful.

Mortar Is Often the First Thing to Fail

Mortar is designed to be the more sacrificial part of a masonry system. Over time, weather can cause those joints to crack, erode, or fall away.

When the masonry itself is still in good condition, tuckpointing can replace deteriorated mortar and help extend the life of the structure.

Waiting too long can allow water to penetrate farther into the masonry and contribute to brick or stone deterioration.

Pay Attention to Movement

Cracking mortar is one thing. A wall, chimney, or other masonry structure that appears to be leaning, bulging, separating, or moving deserves more immediate attention.

Those signs can indicate something beyond routine mortar deterioration and should be professionally evaluated.

A Little Maintenance Can Go a Long Way

Masonry may look permanent, but it still needs maintenance.

Keeping mortar joints in good condition, addressing water intrusion, replacing damaged masonry, and using appropriate breathable water-repellent treatments when needed can help protect these structures for years.

If you're already having your chimney masonry inspected, it's a great time to take a look at the other brick and stonework around your home too.
